I am a big believer in organization giving me an energy boost to accomplish big clean bold work just as Mary Pankiewicz, Owner of Clutter Free & Organized says in her blog!

And on the opposite end, I also believe that a mess sucks up our energy. Just as unfinished tasks that we set out to do and do not get accomplished and are hanging over our head suck up our energy.

Yet when we accomplish a big bold task, we get jazzed and do more!  So what cycle are you on today?

My desk this morning

I just invested in a new MAC Book Pro, 15inch!  I am a PC user and switching over, and spent a chunk of time since getting my MAC on organizing my ‘Big Mother To Do list!’ (no trademark needed! :) ) I feel so empowered.  The stuff is getting done, and checked off and prioritized better than ever!  I feel in charge, details are being held better.

I always have a process that is what are my top 3 things I am tackling today list…. And that list is pulled from the ‘Big Mother To Do list’ that is always running.

Just this past week a Big Fish (someone that is a part of our various programs for Women Business Owners www.bigfishnation.com) said to me, ‘just once I would like to feel like the list is complete.’ My response to her was, ‘that is on your deathbed!  My hope is we all feel that sense of completion then and at the end of every day.  Because at the end of every day, we can only accomplish so much so we have a choice to feel either behind of complete for the day.’

If you are feeling overwhelmed and as though you are not getting enough accomplished I highly recommend that you do the Big Fish 3 Step!

  1. Identify 3 things tonight that you WILL get accomplished tomorrow.  In other words, before you leave work today, identify the 3 things that you are committing to complete tomorrow.  Be realistic!
  2. At the beginning of the day focus on JUST THOSE 3 things!  Get them complete before you open mail, check your voice mail, facebook, twitter, etc.
  3. REPEAT for today and again tomorrow!

You see, when you set out to do something that does not get accomplished you feel deflated, defeated and lower your confidence.  So it is time to change that cycle.  GO BOLD AND BE BOLD!

My desk after a much needed clean up today, which is more empowering?

Mary P. aren’t you proud?  Mary is a Big Fish in one of the Big Fish programs.  She is a very successful professional organizer taking her business to new heights!  See more about her business at http://www.clutterfree.biz/.

Taking Care of Business

April 27, 2010

**************
As April winds down, I’m wondering what are your plans for taking care of your business?

We women often talk about taking care of ourselves and then as business owners, taking care of our clients, customers, and employees.

We are very good about making sure all the outward-facing parts of our business are running smoothly, but are we paying enough attention to the “inside parts” of our businesses?

During a recent Big Fish Mastery conference call meeting, one of the Big Fish declared a BOLD ACTION of taking care of her business.  Her business involves helping others run their businesses smoothly, yet she was putting so much time into her clients and their businesses that she wasn’t taking the time to make things easier for her own business!  I think we can all identify with that situation.

So how can we make sure to give our own business enough care?

As soon as we begin viewing our own business as an entity that needs to be taken care of, we start setting aside time for our own business planning – which is the key to ongoing growth and ultimately the success of our business!

Taking care of our business also means taking time to find and implement organizational and functional efficiencies.  If our internal operations are all knotted up, eventually it will show to our clients – through disgruntled or dissatisfied employees, or gaps in customer service, etc.

However, if we have taken care of our business and operations are running smoothly, that is what the clients will see and benefit from.

I love this example from Michael Gerber’s book, The EMyth Revisited:

A business that looks orderly…

  • …says to your customer that your people know what they’re doing.
  • …says to your people that you know what you’re doing.
  • …says that while the world may not work, some things can.
  • says to your customer that s/he can trust in the result delivered and assures your people that they can trust in their future with you…

When you care for your business (or not!), it shows.

So, back to my original question:  what are your plans for taking care of your business?

The Power of Stuff

October 16, 2009

As the summer winds down, and the chilly air begins to come in, I remember that soon the holidays will be upon us. And I cringe thinking of the stuff that the holidays bring. Mostly I mean physical stuff. I have a 3.5 year old and over the course of the year she receives gifts and mail and boxes from family and friends. And don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful for the thoughtfulness of our family and friends… and I realize that the stuff around the house that does not have a home, and produces clutter weighs every on me. And I get in a mode to cleaning out and clearing out. I tend to be a big ‘thrower awayer….’ Even my daughter when she brings her favorite rocks into the house, will remind me at the end of the day, not to throw her rocks away.

What does this have to do with business? For me everything. I find myself getting bogged down with clutter. It affects my clarity. It affects my productivity. It effects my over all energy. And that absolutely affects the impact I have on my business.

So for me, it is time to clean out. Donate. Pass on. Give away. And make my environment clutter free again. Have everything have its place.

This brings me to another idea. Recently on the Kathryn Zox Radio show, www.kzvoice.com Kathryn spoke of a website, www.29gifts.org I signed up. It is a site that challenges each person to give something, anything, monetary or time or something for 29 days straight. I thought, what a win-win…. I want to clean out, and this is a site that has me give daily… perfect.

So, yesterday, I decided on the ‘gift’ I am going to give all of the Big Fish this year for the holidays and lined it up today. I am excited to share it… (but can’t hear or I’ll give it away. AND IT IS NOT STUFF!) Today I gave of my time for 4 hours to our local NAWBO Austin chapter. And tomorrow I am making a huge donation of ‘stuff’ from my daughter’s room to the Salvation Army.

Clear it out!
